MARAIS WALKING TOUR FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES

Situated in the very heart of Paris, Le Marais is steeped in history but has also kept up with the times and is now also home to a very modern and “hip” part of the city. On this tour your child-friendly and very knowledgeable guide will take you on a journey of discovery of the famous landmarks and fascinating history that make up this magical district. Your family will learn while being kept fully entertained!

Le Marais has a very interesting past. Originally swampland (Marias in French means swamp) the area was transformed into a residential area where many of the French aristocracy resided. Following the French Revolution the district was completed abandoned by the nobility and the working-classes moved in. It gained notoriety as a very bohemian and perhaps even slightly disreputable place to live. In more recent times however the whole area has had a “makeover” and now is one of the liveliest most desirable places of the city.

The tour begins on Place de l’Hôtel de Ville where you will meet with your guide outside the city hall and meander up the Rue des Rosiers. Here you will explore the Jewish Quarter; now abounding with delis and wonderful restaurants this area was once home to the largest Jewish Community in Europe. On the tour your guide will point out numerous hidden courtyards as well as the more famous sights: the Pompidou Centre, the National Archives Garden and St-Paul-St-Louis Church.

The tour finale is a visit to the Place des Voges, thought by many to be one of the most elegant squares in the world. No. 6 was the home of Victor Hugo during the time he wrote Les Miserables. If you wish you can visit his apartment and enjoy the wonderful view from the windows overlooking the square. A perfect way to end your 2-hour private tour of Le Marais!
